What's with February?

Have you ever noticed how much stuff gets packed into our shortest month? February has Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day, and Presidents’ Day (which until recent years was celebrated as two separate birthdays). Then there’s the Super Bowl, the Academy Awards, and every four years (I wonder if it coincides with leap year?) the Winter Olympics happen.

When I was in junior high, I remember our class had to decide when to present the Science Fair. Our teacher said, "Let’s have it in February. We need something to boost our spirits during the winter doldrums." I’m not sure science is the best way to boost spirits, but I think she was on to something. The same something that so many others are also on to. February has become a month for conferences and special events, at least for me. Our church hosted a Women’s Retreat last weekend, the seminary where I work will host a Missions Conference (where I’ll be one of the seminar speakers) in about 10 days, and there is a Christian Writers Conference the following weekend which I will attend. That’s a whole lot of activity for 28 short days. I’m tired just thinking about it.
